We welcomed our first customers in 1965, as North British Housing Association. NBHA was based in Preston, Lancashire, in north-west England – where Places for People still calls home.
More than homes
From our earliest days, we wanted to be more than just a provider of homes. In the 1970s NBHA set up a subsidiary with charitable status to care and support for people using its housing services. A few years later North British Landscapes was created to look after the housing association’s maintenance and landscaping needs.
Talking terms
As NBHA worked on its strengths and grew its portfolio of properties, it started talks with other housing associations about forming a larger group capable of offering a wider range of services. In 1999, the Places for People group was officially formed, with Bristol Churches Housing Association, one of the south-west’s best-known providers of affordable rented homes, joining soon afterwards.
Going places
That step, to create an affordable homes group, provided the launchpad for an expansion of skills, expertise and services to our customers. We’ve brought new companies into our family that share our culture, and continued to plough profits back into our places, creating communities where everyone can live life to its fullest.
